Workplace recycling Cash for Cans Trees campaign

Get the recycling habit

One of the best things that you, as an individual, can do for the environment is to get into the habit of recycling aluminium cans and foil. This is because the recycling process uses so much less energy than making the metal the first time - it's simply a matter of re-melting the aluminium ready to use again.

With new drinks cans often back on the shelf just six weeks after you have given them for recycling, the energy savings quickly mount up!

Alucans and foil

  • Recycling uses only 5% of the energy needed to make
aluminium from its raw material, bauxite - that’s a 95% energy saving

  • Aluminium products are infinitely recyclable, so when you get into the recycling habit you really do help save natural resources

  • The quality of recycled aluminium is maintained to such a high standard that there are secure and growing end-markets for the metal, which keeps global aluminium prices high. At up to £900 per tonne, aluminium is by far the most valuable packaging material in everyday use

  Doorstep collections Can bank

  • Aluminium’s high value means that it makes a big contribution towards the collection costs of multi-material recycling schemes, whether doorstep collections, or steel and aluminium can banks

  • The high value also drives charity or community-benefit collections - there are nearly 300 places in the UK where you can sell your aluminium cans for cash. Larger-scale collection projects, often providing public-access recycling services, and with their own sorting and baling equipment, can sell cans or foil direct to the reprocessor for best prices

  • As a further incentive to everyone to get recycling, a nationwide Alupro campaign promises to plant fruit trees in Malawi for every tonne recycled.
