FREE INCENTIVES FOR WORKPLACE RECYCLERS

Operators of recycling services to workplace locations are being offered free materials to help boost their client base, and encourage staff in the workplace to recycle more.

More than £25m-worth of aluminium drinks cans are available for collection from the workplace and from sports, leisure and travel locations. As dedicated home recyclers increasingly want to recycle their drinks packs wherever they use them, the time is right to offer a service to businesses which reduces their waste and improves recycling performance.

The materials available from not-for-profit industry organisation, Alupro, tie in with their innovative incentive programme, Trees for Africa, which will grow a native tree in the UK or Africa for every tonne of aluminium cans and foil recycled until September 2006. The trees will be raised from seed in nurseries at a special forest management project in Burkina Faso, run with five village communities by Bristol-based charity Tree Aid. Trees help prevent soil erosion in sub-Saharan Africa, and the new trees for the Gabio Forest project have been chosen for their food and medicinal uses, as well as to help boost production of honey to sell at local markets.

Alupro offers free leaflets about the programme, for service providers to send to existing and prospective customers. The leaflet carries the service provider's name, and targets business participation in the programme. Free posters, with a striking image, and details of the tree-planting programme, are then available for companies to use to encourage their staff to recycle more. Collection boxes are also available for a small charge.

"The Trees for Africa programme is proving exactly the right incentive to engage people with recycling" says Alupro chief executive Paul Martin. "Who would rather throw away valuable drinks cans, when recycling them not only saves massive amounts of energy, but helps people in Africa build sustainable lives ?

"We are very keen to help recycling businesses collect more aluminium drinks cans from away-from-locations, and look forward to working with them."
