Meeks SUMMER BOOST FOR
TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE The hot summer weather will be providing a big boost to a recycling initiative which is helping tackle climate change in the UK and sub-saharan Africa. Over the summer period, over 2 billion aluminium drinks cans will be sold in the UK, which could result in 35,000 native trees being planted - a tree will be grown for every tonne of aluminium drinks cans and foil recycled this year thanks to an initiative run by not-for profit organisation Alupro, in partnership with Bristol-based charity, Tree Aid. Trees will be planted locally and also in special nurseries supplying five village communties in Burkina Faso, where all species have been chosen to provide food, medicine, income and for people learning to tackle the effects of the prolonged droughts now common because of climate change. The more we recycle, the more trees will be grown, so it's a perfect time to get the recycling habit. More than 50,000 trees are due to be planted this year, thanks to the efforts of UK recyclers. Recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy needed to make it from the raw material and with recycled cans often back on the shelf in just six weeks, the energy savings quickly grow.
