RECYCLING YOUR ALUMINIUM DRINKS CANS AND FOIL IN HUNTINGDON CAN HELP PLANT FRUIT TREES IN MALAWI

Richmond Fellowship recycling team are urging recyclers in Huntingdon and the surrounding areas to support the centres aluminium drinks can and foil collections. Not only will recyclers be helping the local recycling group raise funds for the centre, but will be helping to plant fruit trees in Malawi through the "Recycle for Africa" campaign.

The recycling team based at Huntingdonshire Regional College, California Road, Huntingdon will be launching the "Recycle for Africa" aluminium cans and foil collection at Sealed Air Ltd with employees from the company and clients from Richmond Fellowship recycling team. The company have been recycling with the centre for some time and are happy that they are supporting a local recycling group and contributing to planting trees in Malawi, through the "Recycle for Africa" campaign.

The "Recycle for Africa" campaign run by Alupro, working with a British based Charity Ripple Africa, will plant a fruit tree in Malawi for every tonne of aluminium drinks cans and foil recycled in the UK over the next two years. The programme will also fund the management of the programme making sure the fruit trees (orange, lemon, mangoes, guava) planted in the 135 nurseries, mature and provide a basis for small community businesses in Malawi. The more cans and foil recycled in Huntingdon, through all recycling schemes, including kerbside collections and bring banks, the more fruit trees will be planted in Malawi.

Lesley Bagnall from Richmond Fellowship commented, "We welcome Sealed Air company's enthusiasm to keep recycling their alucans and foil with our centre. Any business who wants to set up can and foil recycling could contact our centre on Tel 01480 431891".

Julie Meeks from Alupro added, "Alupro are delighted that Richmond Fellowship is supporting the "Recycle for Africa" campaign. Recyclers in Huntingdon can help two very worthy causes when they recycle their cans and foil with the centre. If recyclers would like to know more about the campaign they can log onto www.alupro.org.uk ".

Spokesperson Michelle Wilson, EHS Manager at Sealed Air said "An important mission of our whole company is one of the importance of reducing the volumes of waste that our sites send to the landfill . Recycling our aluminium cans is one way we've achieved that. The whole project has been a great success, and we continue to look for new ways that our location can contribute. We'd encourage more organisations to get involved."

Recycling aluminium saves up to 95% energy and emissions (compared with primary production from bauxite). Twenty times more efficient. In fact 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in circulation!

We must all get into the recycling habit - recycling aluminium saves massive amounts of energy and emissions - and helps provide a sustainable future for rural communities in Malawi.
