Meeks CLIMATE CHANGE
APPEAL - DEADLINE APPROACHES The deadline is fast approaching for getting all the drinks cans you have used this summer turned into trees to help tackle climate change in Africa. Every aluminium can and kilo of foil recycled before the end of September will count towards a new tree being grown to help tackle climate change in Burkina Faso, so now's the time to make sure there are no post-barbecue empties put on one side, waiting to be recycled. The bid to grow 50,000 trees in the drylands of sub-Saharan Africa, where climate change is having a devasting effect on village communities which rely on ancient forests for survival, is backed by not for profit organisation Alupro, with partners Tree Aid. One tree will be given for every tonne of aluminium recycled and all the trees that have been chosen for Africa are grown for their food and medicinal use. Mango, Cashew and Baobab trees also encourage the production of honey, which is sold to provide much needed income for the five village communities involved in the project. An Alupro spokesperson said, " Everyone has done exceptionally well so far with their recycling efforts, so please keep up the good work and remember to keep on recycling all your aluminium cans and foil as every piece really will count. As well as helping the African project, one tree will be grown locally for every tonne we recycle." Recycling saves 95% of the energy needed to make it from the raw material and with recycled cans often back on the shelf in just six weeks, the energy savings quickly grow.
