CHAMPION RECYCLERS PLANT 7,000 BULBS!

With the long days of winter just around the corner, canny aluminium can and foil recyclers are looking forward to a colourful spring after planting over 7,000 daffodil, crocus and tulip bulbs this autumn. The bulbs are a reward given to recyclers for cashing in their drink cans and foil at local cash for can centres.

Cash for Can Centres across the UK are encouraging recyclers to carry on recycling and collect summer bulbs. Lily, crocosmia and ranunculus bulbs are up for grabs. The promotion is jointly sponsored by Novelis Recycling and The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) and is part of Alupro's 'Trees for Africa' campaign; whereby for every tonne of aluminium packaging recycled at cash for can centres nationwide, a tree will be planted in the West African country of Burkina Faso.

A mango, baobab or acacia tree will be grown and planted as part of a bee-keeping and woodland management programme in village communities in Burkina Faso. The trees will be used for food and medicinal purposes as well as helping to boost the production of honey - generating much needed income for the communities.

Alupro's Regional Progamme Manager, Ruth Meeke says: "The campaign has been a tremendous success so far, with over 7,000 spring bulbs being planted across the UK this autumn, whilst at the same time supporting our West African project. We hope recyclers will carry on recycling more and more cans and foil and claim their summer bulbs in January. All they need to do to register, is pick up a registration form at their local cash for can centre and send it back to Alupro - and keep on recycling!"

To receive the free summer-flowering bulbs, recyclers need to register with Alupro and then save their cash for cans receipts. The campaign carries on until the 31st January, 2006, so there is plenty of time for recyclers to start collecting.
