An opportunity for local authority officers to see how climate change is affecting sub-Saharan Africa is being offered by Alupro (Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation). The fact-finding trip will visit the Gabio Forest in Burkina Faso, where Alupro is planting a native tree for every tonne of aluminium cans and foil recycled this year, and also visit the forest seed bank in the country's capital Ouagadougou. Blooming Marvellous Thanks To Recycling..
Your local town should be a brighter place this spring and summer, thanks to dedicated aluminium can and foil recyclers. Masses of crocus, daffodils and lilies will be blooming in gardens and window boxes thanks to a scheme to reward recyclers for every kilogramme of aluminium recycled. Local cash for cans centres were part of a promotion to encourage recycling, who have rewarded collectors with spring and summer flowering bulbs - in addition to the regular cash price paid by the centre for the empty aluminium cans and foil. Primary
Schools Tackle Climate Change..
More
than 2,000 primary schools are finding out how recycling in the UK
is helping tackle the effects of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa.
The schools have registered for a new resource pack and tree-growing kit
which shows how a tree is being grown in the Gabio Forest, Burkina Faso
for every tonne of aluminium cans and foil recycled in the UK. The more
we recycle, the more trees will be grown, and it is hoped that enough people
will get the recycling habit in 2006 to enable 40,000 new trees to be planted.

Recyclers
Help Tackle Climate Change In Africa..
The
more we recycle, the more we are helping tackle the effects of climate
change in the sub-Saharan drylands of Africa, thanks to a new project
run by not-for-profit organisation, Alupro.
Longer dry seasons are seriously damaging the ancient forests on which
many village communities depend: trees are dying earlier, bush fires are
more frequent, and food more scarce. So re-planting trees, and learning
how to manage the new situation more effectively are essential for the
future of the area.

Aluminium
Targets achieved
...
The Environment
Agency has confirmed to Alupro that aluminium targets were not
missed in 2004, as has been reported by some commentators on the
published data, since sufficient PRNs were available to meet business
obligations. The shortage which caused PRN prices to rise to around £70
a tonne towards the end of the year was mainly caused by contracts
which required 2004 tonnage to be carried over to 2005.
