This resource brings a complex subject to life by studying Alupro’s special fruit tree growing project in Malawi. The three strands of sustainable development - economic growth with environmental protection and social improvement - are discussed in the context of the impact the fruit tree project is having in rural Malawi, and students consider the differences between the environmental challenges in the UK and those in rural Malawi.

The pack is presented in a long-life plastic zipped folder, and includes a poster to encourage everyone to keep recycling, plus:

Powerpoint presentation to introduce students to the project

Two A4 project cards, each one with a photocopiable illustrated side for students, plus full teacher’s notes with suggested lesson plan, curriculum links (citizenship, geography and science, with links to English, media and ICT) and information boxes:

  • Card 1: sustainable development.
What it means/the challenges in Malawi/how the project is a practical approach to improving the economic, social and environmental conditions of people’s lives. Aluminium recycling and how recycling more will help support the work in Africa.

  • Card 2: cultural exchange.   Make a video about what helping the environment means in your school. Teacher’s notes include information on communicating ideas effectively to different audiences.

Email Alupro for copy of the pack including poster and powerpoint presentation on CD: info@alupro.org.uk
