The value of aluminium cans and foil, together with the public profile of aluminium recycling as being - without question - the right environmental thing to do, earn aluminium its place in any collection system.
Autumn 2009 will see a new drive to boost collection of empty aerosols and clean foil, with additional funding for the campaign being provided by Unilever, BAMA (the aerosol manufacturers association), Alupro members Coppice Alupack and Nicholl Food Packaging, and manufacturer of foil platters, Jena.
Since 99% of aluminium packaging is consumer packaging, mainly discarded in the home, and there is ample reprocessing capacity and end-markets for drinks cans, empty aerosols and foil, the only barrier to high recycling rates is collection - convenient infrastructure and higher participation rates.
