Aluminium screw caps are easy to recycle: Simply put them back on the bottle!
In the UK Alupro estimates 5,000 tonnes of aluminium is used every year to manufacture caps and closures on bottles for wine, spirits, cordials and cooking ingredients such as oils and vinegars.
Aluminium is becoming the material of choice for bottle caps and closures. Its barrier qualities protect the contents of the pack and avoid tainting – making a valuable contribution to cutting food wastage.
Putting the tops back on your glass bottle means they can be easily be separated during the glass recycling process. The aluminium is extracted from the glass fragments using mechanical sorters and saved for reprocessing.
Alupro launched a campaign in 2013 to encourage householders to ‘leave their cap on’ when recycling glass bottles at their local bring bank. There are currently 14 local authorities using our campaign on 4,800 bottle banks and 60,000 kerbside recycling boxes.
